Saturday was Kathrine’s bday. So I, being an awesome guy decided to try and pull a prank on her by giving her a fake gift. Know this: She hates Garrison Keilor and has told me about it many times. So when I saw he was doing a show at Town Hall for most of December, I printed out the page and circled every single instance of Garrison. Then I put it in an envelope.
I gave her a card which was strange(but hopefully funny?), it said, “This is to tell you about the Barn Dance this weekend. Barn Dance is at 8.” I am weird. And then the envelope. And exclaimed, “I thought you’d really like to go to this!” Kathrine’s face blanched but only slightly. As she fought it back and contorted her face back into a big smile. She hid her disappointment well. But rather than realizing that it was a big joke right from the get–she said, “You’re so sweet!” and hugged me. Then she said, “Oh look! There are all sorts of things on here.” Seeing she was cleverly trying to navigate away from the Keilor, I was not to be put off and replied, “Oh yeah, but I was really hoping we’d go see him, isn’t he wonderful?” and indicated the 10+ dates he was playing. Then she repeated her sentiment about what a great gift.
I waited.
And then yelled, “How could you think I would get you such an awful gift?!”
Then I gave her my real gift, tickets to see David Sedaris in December–whom she LOVES.
Kathrine thinks I was just counting on her being mean and it backfired when she just responded nicely. Still… I think it was a sound idea.
