Musical Rear Window

One of the possibly unattractive features of our apartment here in Los Angeles is that has little “view” per se. It faces inward and so to a whole slew of balconies that are exactly like our balcony. But one of the fun things about this is that it makes for a whole lot of people watching.

For instance, for the first month or so, the apartment across from us was vacant. And then we’d start noticing people looking at the apartment. And Porter and I would play a game of, Do-We-Think-These-People-Will-Take-The-Apartment? And sometimes there’d be a cute girl and we’d think, “it would be nice if this girl rented the apartment”. Or there’d be some scary looking guy and we’d think, “I sure hope this douche does not.”

Then a couple rented the apartment and they seem nice but that ended our game.

But then I started to hear the strains of someone hesitatingly playing guitar above our apartment. Then I heard a girl singing. And she has a nice little voice.

If this were a romantic comedy, (or better yet Fame! the movie), I would break out my guitar and we would start a duet between our two balconies. But it is not. So what I do instead is silently judge her on how well she changes chords and whether or not I think the songs she covers are good ones. So far, I think she’s doing well. For instance, last night she played some Crosby, Stills, and Nash. (No Young.)
